He has also become the author of four racing books. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6.0pt;\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\"\u003eBorn in Indianapolis, he witnessed his first auto race in 1964: the Indianapolis 500. A college journalism major, Shaffer parlayed his education into covering motorsports, first as a newspaper reporter and later as a columnist and feature writer for \u003ci\u003eIndy Car Racing Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eVintage Motorsport\u003c\/i\u003e. He spent several years as a publicist for Bettenhausen Motorsports and PDM Racing before moving to television in the coverage of the IndyCar series by Versus and NBC Sports Network. Along the way, he also authored the \u003ci\u003eAutocourse Official History: CART: The First 20 Years, 1979 to 1998\u003c\/i\u003e. He served as co-author with Donald Davidson in the \u003ci\u003eAutocourse Official History of the Indianapolis 500\u003c\/i\u003e and more recently authored \u003ci\u003e500 on (the Indy) 500: Tales, Facts and Figures on the Greatest Race in the World\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Arial Unicode MS'; color: black; mso-font-kerning: .5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: HI; mso-bidi-language: HI;\"\u003eShaffer has found research to be as enjoyable as writing when it comes to the history of the Indianapolis 500. That is what made this latest book a fun experience.
