By Gordon Jones
Forewords by George Follmer and Richard Attwood
In the most glittering era of sports car racing, the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Lola T70 and its descendants radiated star quality. These big racers, both brutal and beautiful, graced the Can-Am stage in North America as open spyders and the world sports car championship as closed coupés. Powered by big American V8 engines, they were massively fast and exceedingly popular, both with fans and the racers themselves. In this important new book, which has taken Lola enthusiast Gordon Jones three decades to complete, the racing history of the T70 and the Can-Am models that followed — from T160 to T310 — is exhaustively recorded, complete with a superb array of 700 photographs. All sports car devotees will treasure this labour of love.
- The introduction is a celebration of the genius of Eric Broadley, detailing the Mark 1 sports car and all the other Lola racing cars up to the introduction of the T70, including the involvement of Peter Jackson’s Specialised Mouldings.
- The story of the ground-breaking Mark 6 GT, its Le Mans baptism, its links to the Ford GT40 programme, and its subsequent restoration by a Shelby Cobra racer.
- The sad saga of the Lola-Aston Martin’s 1967 Le Mans adventure.
- Full details are given for every Roadster and Coupé T70 built and raced.
- The creation and racing lives of all the T70’s successors: every T160, Peter Revson’s T220, Jackie Stewart’s T260 and David Hobbs’s T310.
- Covers every race from 1963 to 1974 in which these Lolas ran, split by World Sports Car Championship, European and South African racing, and separately all the SCCA, USRRC and Can-Am series races, detailing the cars and drivers, the opposition, the practice times and grid positions, the story of the races, the results and post-race analysis.
- A comprehensive list of every Lola, in every race, in every year from 1963 to 1974, giving entrant, driver(s), chassis number, engine, car colour, race number, race result and commentary.
- A history of horsepower and torque: Ford and GM; Small Block and Big Block; American engine wizards of the sixties.

Gordon Jones’s first encounter with a Lola came in 1959 while marshalling at Goodwood, where three Lola Mark 1s sat on the front row of the grid and finished 1–2–3. Later, when the T70 came along, he found one close at hand as hillclimber David Good ran a spyder version from a nearby workshop. He watched, and wrote about, the wonderful T70 coupés as they appeared — a fascination that has lasted ever since. He co-wrote with John Allen The Ford That Beat Ferrari, an acclaimed Ford GT40 history first published in 1985 and reissued by Evro in 2019. He lives in France.
“They say you get out what you put in. For Lola enthusiast Gordon Jones, his book on the celebrated T70 sportscar took him nearly 40 years to put together. His sizeable and meticulous work is a conspicuous labour of love… he very much paints an insightful picture throughout, including context, story and analysis... a comprehensive reference as well as an entertaining read… beautifully presented and illustrated.”
Motorsport News
“A gargantuan effort, all the more so since the book is packed with evocative period photos of so many of the cars mentioned, while covering even the most obscure outings… The technical back-up and race-by-race results are similarly outstanding… Without question, this will be a leading contender in any of the annual book awards, and in my opinion would be a thoroughly deserving winner. Of course I’m biased to the subject matter, but I also know a damn good book when I hold one and read it as avidly as I did this great example… As usual, it’s produced to Evro’s very high standards. If you’re a Lola fan, there’s no way you can possibly do without this.”
Grand Prix+
“Beautifully produced… almost 700 photographs complement tales of the cars, the races and the people involved.”
Practical Classics
“It’s difficult to imagine a more thorough book on the subject.”
The Automobile
“An impressively comprehensive effort… you can sense Jones’s expertise on every page… it is very nicely designed on high-quality paper and includes an astonishing 700 photos, each generously captioned and none stingily reproduced… Bargain.”
Octane, Book of the Month
“A brilliant work... richly illustrated… Evro adds another beautiful work to its already impressive oeuvre of both car and motorsport related publications.”

“This book trades on detail… That’s a good thing, and makes it all the more compelling for enthusiasts of this era of motor sport. For Lola aficionados, it’s a must-have.”
Magneto
“Just mention of the words Lola T70 and my eyes glaze over. It is, in my view, simply the finest competition sports car ever to grace a race track… So it goes without saying, even before opening, I was also going to love this book; a chunky, 576-page labour of love, published by Evro Publishing, and compiled over the last 40 years by fellow Lola devotee Gordon Jones… No wasted words. It starts at the beginning and finishes at the end, and includes everything in between. What’s not to like?”

“Gordon Jones illuminates the genesis and each individual year in detail.”

“When my review copy of this book arrived, it came with a note saying I had ‘a little light reading’, but after picking it up, I don’t know if I have suddenly gone all weak, or the publishers have gone onto a steroid diet! For a subject this large, and with the amount of data captured over a 30-year period, it is no wonder that the book is as large and heavy as it is… For racing historians, this book is a must. For modellers, there are so many illustrations for getting the small details correct, and for the general motorsport enthusiast, there are so many stories to explore. In short, this book offers so much to so many people.”
Chequered Flag Services
“Gordon Jones’s book, 40 years in the making, is not lacking in detail. This is a huge book… It is beautifully produced, as one has come to expect from Evro, the page layout is clear and reader friendly and the forensic detail of the text is leavened by hundreds of period photographs, mainly in colour.”

“If you’re passionate about these cars, you’ll love this book’s exhaustive recording and impressive array of photos.”
Auto Express
“A comprehensive history of the model.”
GP Racing
“The Lola T70 was long overdue a full-length ‘biography’… Demonstrating the incredible amount of research involved, there’s a report on every single race in which the Lolas participated in this period and the large 576-page book contains many hundreds of superb photos, plenty of them from pretty obscure events… A stunning achievement!”
NZ Classic Driver
“Heavyweight… comprehensive… All that’s really missing is the famously epic soundtrack that the T70 is known for.”
